Implementing BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Policies
Set clear BYOD rules
Editorial update: 21 September 2026. Introductory learning material.
A Bring Your Own Device policy should define which personal devices may access business systems and what the organization can manage on them. Agree the policy before enabling access.
- Define permitted devices, applications and information.
- Specify updates, screen locks, encryption and access requirements appropriate to the device.
- Explain monitoring, privacy boundaries and the scope of any remote removal of business data.
- Document reporting, support, device replacement and employee departure procedures.
- Provide an alternative where personal-device use is unsuitable.
Activity: Walk through a lost-device scenario with IT, HR and the device owner. Identify who can act and what personal data could be affected.
Reference: FTC cybersecurity guidance for small businesses. Check the source and your system provider’s current instructions before implementation.
