Encrypting Your Network
Understand what network encryption protects
Editorial update: 21 September 2026. Introductory learning material.
Wi-Fi encryption protects the wireless connection. HTTPS/TLS protects an application connection, and a VPN protects traffic within its configured tunnel. These controls cover different parts of a communication path.
Encryption does not prevent an authorized recipient from misusing data, repair a compromised endpoint or make a fraudulent website trustworthy. Use approved systems, authenticate recipients and protect access to encryption keys.
Activity: Map how one sensitive record travels between two approved systems. Ask the responsible technical owner which connections are encrypted and where the data is decrypted.
Reference: FTC cybersecurity guidance for small businesses. Check the source and your system provider’s current instructions before implementation.
