Automating Backups
Automate backups and check the results
Editorial update: 21 September 2026. Introductory learning material.
Automation can reduce missed manual work, but scheduled backups can still fail. A successful job notification does not establish that all required data can be restored.
- Assign an owner to review failures and capacity warnings.
- Confirm the scope includes necessary data, settings and dependencies.
- Protect backup credentials and recovery information.
- Test restoration into an appropriate environment and record the result.
- Review retention and recoverability after system changes.
Activity: Follow one backup from the scheduled job to a documented restoration test. Record any missing data or access requirements.
Reference: CISA StopRansomware Guide. Check the source and your system provider’s current instructions before implementation.
