Journey to Certification: A Step-by-Step Guide
2015 foundation. Clause references in this lesson refer to ISO 9001:2015. Continue to the 2026 addendum for the current revision and transition guidance. Practical tips are examples, not additional ISO requirements.
From implementation to independent certification
ISO publishes standards; independent certification bodies assess organizations and make certification decisions. Accreditation provides an additional basis for confidence in a certification body’s competence within its accredited scope. Do not assume that a country, ISO itself or this training provider will issue an organization’s ISO 9001 certificate.
- Define the QMS scope, applicable requirements and responsible leadership.
- Compare actual practices with the selected edition and address gaps.
- Implement the processes, evaluate competence and gather operating evidence.
- Conduct internal audits, evaluate results in management review and address problems.
- Select a competent certification body and verify its relevant accredited scope where accredited certification is sought.
- Agree the audit program, scope, sites, edition, timing and commercial arrangements. Initial certification normally includes readiness review (stage 1) and implementation/effectiveness assessment (stage 2).
- Address findings and await the independent certification decision. An audit visit is not itself a certificate.
- Maintain the system and meet the ongoing surveillance and recertification arrangements.
For a new project or a 2015-certified organization, consult the 2026 addendum before choosing an edition or audit date. A transition deadline does not extend an expired, suspended or otherwise invalid certificate.
Selecting a certification body
Check the legal identity, accreditation and scope, relevant sector competence, site coverage, audit approach, quotation, transfer conditions and certificate verification route. Clarify how findings are resolved and who makes the certification decision. Keep implementation advice and independent certification responsibilities clear.
Exercise
Prepare a brief for a certification-body discussion: scope, products/services, sites, staff, outsourced activities, current certification status, intended edition and preferred timing. Record the answers and agreed actions. Do not promise a customer a certification date before the arrangements and readiness are established.
