Jiu-Jitsu Etiquette: What You Need to Know on Day One

Starting your journey in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is an exciting step, but knowing the basic rules of etiquette will help you make a great impression and show respect to your training partners and instructors. Here are the essential guidelines to keep in mind, especially on your first day:

1. Stay Clean and Healthy

  • Hygiene is key. Shower before class, keep your nails trimmed, and wear freshly laundered gear (gi or no-gi attire).
  • Don’t train if you’re sick. Even a mild sniffle can spread germs in close-contact sports. Be considerate of your teammates’ health.

2. Wear Slippers Off the Mats

  • Protect the mats. Wear slippers or sandals anytime you step off the mat, especially in the bathroom. Bare feet in the restroom can introduce bacteria back onto the mats, compromising hygiene for everyone.

3. Chew a Stick of Gum (But Not While Training!)

  • Fresh breath is a small courtesy that goes a long way in close-contact drills. Chew a stick of gum before class and spit it out before stepping onto the mat. No one wants to roll with someone whose breath is less than fresh.

4. Listen and Show Respect

  • Arrive on time. Bow or greet the instructor and your training partners with respect.
  • Pay close attention to instructions and avoid interrupting during demonstrations. It’s important to create a focused learning environment.

5. Tap Early, Tap Often

  • As a beginner, prioritize safety over ego. If you’re caught in a submission, tap out quickly to avoid injury. Your training partners are there to help you learn, not to hurt you.

6. Ask Questions, But Spar Responsibly

  • Ask questions during appropriate moments, like after instruction. When sparring, focus on applying techniques at a controlled pace rather than relying on strength or aggression.

7. Bring a Positive Attitude

  • Be patient with yourself and others. Progress in BJJ takes time, so approach each class with a willingness to learn and improve.

By following these simple guidelines, you’ll start your BJJ journey on the right foot and build strong relationships within your gym community. Respect and consideration are the foundations of martial arts—embrace them from day one!
