  • ISO 9001:2026 Is Published — Plan Your QMS Update

Publication status checked: 21 September 2026. This article updates the earlier pre-publication discussion.

ISO published ISO 9001:2026 on 16 September 2026. Organizations can now plan their review against the issued edition rather than the Final Draft International Standard (FDIS).

ISO’s announcement highlights clearer requirements, leadership and quality culture, ethical behavior, risks and opportunities, and alignment with the Harmonized Structure. These are a starting point for discussion, not a substitute for reading the standard.

Publication and certification transition are separate

Do not assume a three-year deadline or that an existing certificate became invalid on publication day. Ask your certification body which transition arrangements apply to your certificate, audit cycle, and scope. Confirm customer and contractual requirements separately.

Start with a practical gap review

Colabmo’s approach is to connect the quality system to the work people actually do. The following steps are practical planning suggestions; they are not a clause-by-clause statement of new requirements.

    1. Confirm the baseline. Identify the edition used by your current system, certificate and contracts. Obtain the issued standard and record the transition instructions provided by your certification body.
    2. Review the work and the evidence. Compare applicable requirements with your process maps, procedures, forms, ERP workflows and records. Record each gap, its owner, the required action and the evidence needed for closure.
    3. Prioritize useful changes. Address unclear responsibilities, inconsistent records and processes that do not match documented practice. Avoid changing document numbers or clause mappings without a practical reason.
    4. Implement and train. Update affected processes under document control. Explain what changes for each process owner and what records they need to keep.
    5. Check effectiveness. Use internal audits, process measures and management review to assess whether the changes work. Resolve open issues before the agreed transition audit.

Questions to bring to the review

    • Which processes are difficult to explain, maintain or audit?
    • Do procedures and ERP workflows match how the team works?
    • Are risks and improvement opportunities reviewed deliberately?
    • Can process owners explain responsibilities, evidence and escalation routes?
    • What changes affect suppliers, customers or contractual commitments?
    • What timing has the certification body confirmed in writing?

    Review, implement, and hand over

A focused review should produce a manageable action plan. Implementation should improve the working system, and handover should leave your team with clear responsibilities and usable records.

Colabmo supports Quality Systems & Audit Readiness, including gap reviews, process mapping, documentation and internal audit preparation. Discuss your QMS review.
